NEDCC's 11th Annual
School for Scanning: The A-Z of Creating Digital Collections
Minneapolis, Minnesota

School for Scanning Minneapolis drew an audience of over 200 librarians, archivists, museum professionals, and other representatives from cultural heritage institutions.

 

NEDCC presented its 11th annual School for Scanning in Minneapolis on May 1–3, 2007, for an audience of over 200 professionals from libraries, museums, archives, and other cultural heritage organizations, as well as corporate archives. The conference was held at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center and was co-sponsored by the Midwest Art Conservation Center.  The three-day conference brought together a faculty of notably respected experts who guided participants through digitization from theory into practice.  Participants were provided with an up-to-date briefing on creating and managing sustainable digital collections, covering topics from metadata to rights management, and from file formats to funding.
                                                                                  
Break-out sessions were a new feature of the conference this year. Participants chose two of three conscurrent sessions on Day One, Image Capture, Selection for Digitization, and Test Driving the Technology, and three sessions on Day Two, Digitizing Text, Digitizing Images, and Digitizing Audio and Video. These smaller sessions encouraged discussion and provided an opportunity to explore topics in detail with faculty members.

For the first time, a Vendor Showcase was presented at the School for Scanning.  Attendees had the opportunity to visit with vendors and view demonstrations of current digital products and services. Many vendors noted that participants’ questions became more specific and knowledgeable as the conference progressed.
