NEDCC’s range of educational offerings have had a growing national and international impact on cultural heritage digitization practices, dating back to the inception of its landmark School for Scanning conference in 1995. As the times have changed, Digital Directions, NEDCC’s current fundamentals of digitization conference, has expanded and adapted its scope (and name!) to “capture” the full life-cycle of digital collections care, from creation, to curation, to use.

Today, it’s a new era in digital collections care and we’re heading back to school! It’s been 15 years since NEDCC first asked the most basic questions about digitization: What? When? Why? Who? and (the often elusive) How? We’ve come a long way in our understanding of digital collections and we’ve embraced models, standards, and best practices for creation, curation, and use. As we’ve evolved, our audiences’ expectations have too. New technologies, global access, and transformative use of our collections challenge us to ask those very same questions again, and to consider whether yesterday’s answers still hold true for today’s digital world.

Please join a faculty of national experts, experienced digital collections curators, and colleagues from institutions large and small as we come together for two and a half days of exploration and study to identify new answers and new opportunities for some long-standing challenges, considerations, and choices surrounding today’s digital collections care!
