Creating and Maintaining Digital Collections

This face-to-face workshop explores the issues that cultural institutions face when planning digitization projects. What are the benefits and responsibilities of doing so? What new approaches to a collection are made possible through digitization? This day-long workshop walks participants through the questions they should ask when considering and planning digital projects and then outlines the basic guidelines for digitizing a collection.

5 Archival Recertification Credits (ARCs) will be awarded by the Academy of Certified Archivists to Certified Archivists who complete an NEDCC Workshop.

Care of Paintings

Location: NEDCC, Andover, MA

This workshop will cover the specific factors to consider while caring for your paintings, whether you are establishing new procedures or making improvements to existing policies.  Topics will include environmental issues, such as temperature, relative humidity, and pollutants, as well as storage and display options, “best practices” for handling and transporting, and housekeeping procedures.  Participants will also learn practical remedial care methods and be provided with guidelines to consider while working with a conservator. 

The Care of Paintings workshop is part of a collaborative program with the Balboa Art Conservation Center (BACC), a San Diego–based sister organization in the Regional Alliance for Preservation. NEDCC will bring this workshop to New England five times over the next two years. BACC will host NEDCC’s Creating and Maintaining Digital Collections workshop as part of BACC’s Focus on Collections Care workshop series in the Western states. Venues will be announced as soon as they are finalized.

Basic Book Repair

This face-to-face workshop walks participants through the steps in managing a book repair program. Participants will gain hands-on experience in basic book and paper repair techniques for general library collections. Decision-making about selection and treatment and choosing appropriate materials for book repair will be discussed. In the hands-on component, participants will learn to: 

  • Mend tears using a variety of techniques
  • Repair hinges using a variety of techniques
  • Tip in and hinge in loose or replacement pages

Tools will be provided for use in the book repair workshops. Participants may wish to purchase their tools at the conclusion of the workshop. The tool kit consists of 2 glue brushes, dusting brush, ruler, pH pen, bamboo skewers, bone folder, Olfa cutter, cutting mat, microspatula, awl, scissors, vinyl eraser, small glue pot, and tweezers. The kit costs $65. Payment – on the day of the workshop ONLY – can be made by cash for the exact amount, personal check, institutional check, or credit card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express).

Who should attend?

This workshop is designed for library staff who perform book repair in libraries and/or supervisors of book repair units for general collections. This workshop will NOT cover techniques for the repair of research collections or materials that are rare, special, or archival.

Identification and Care of Photographs

This face-to-face workshop, an introduction to the preservation of photographs, will focus on historical photographic prints, including their identification, deterioration, and conservation. Participants will learn to recognize various photographic formats and will study the preservation problems associated with each format type. The workshop will culminate with a discussion of storage concerns and an examination of photographs brought in by participants.

Exhibiting library and archival materials is a good way to increase awareness of collections and to engage the public. This face-to-face workshop will introduce safe methods of exhibiting books, manuscripts, and documents. The necessary elements of an exhibition program will be covered as well as materials and techniques for mounting collections. Participants will be given hands-on experience with: 

  • Mounting paper items in mats
  • Making mounts for flat items
  • Making book mounts from mat board and Vivak® 

Common exhibit mistakes will be discussed. Sample materials and supply catalogues will be provided.

Location: 6-month online facilitated course - Asynchronous study plus 11 live online webinars

This semester-equivalent course covers the issues and technologies needed to design, implement, and manage an effective preservation program for documents, books, photographs, other paper-based materials, and digital collections. Course topics include: an introduction to preservation; the deterioration of paper, film, and electronic media; the building and environment; collections care; reformatting (digital and analog) and conservation treatment; disaster planning; and building a preservation program.  

Session assignments are completed on a weekly basis. The 11 live webinars explore each of the course topics in depth and encourage an exchange of ideas. A class forum guides students who wish to pursue additional readings and provides an additional venue for class discussion as well as a help line between webinars.

Who should attend?

This course is tailored to full-time librarians, archivists, town clerks, curators, and collections or records managers who have (at least) part-time responsibility for preservation of historical or special collections or of primary research materials, including: books, manuscripts, records, photographs, ephemera, maps, other paper-based or documentary formats, audiovisual materials, and digital collections.
