Decision-making about selection and treatment and choosing appropriate materials for book repair will be discussed. In the hands-on component, participants will learn to:

    • Mend tears using a variety of techniques
    • Repair hinges using a variety of techniques
    • Tip in and hinge in loose or replacement pages

  • The foundation of any good disaster plan is risk assessment. This webinar explores ways to identify internal and external hazards and assess the risks they pose. Natural, industrial, technological, building, and even human hazards will be examined for mitigation and planning purposes.

  • This in-person workshop is an introduction to the construction of simple enclosures from quality materials for library and archival materials. It focuses on techniques that do not require expensive equipment and supplies. In the hands-on component, participants will learn to:

    • Construct a custom pamphlet binder with pocket or flap enclosure
    • Construct a book wrapper
    • Construct a corrugated clamshell box

Construction of other enclosures will be demonstrated as time permits.

  • This live online webinar will cover the preservation of multimedia materials commonly found in archival collections, such as audio tapes, video tapes, motion picture film, and optical discs. The structure and deterioration of these materials and the proper preservation environments are discussed.

  • This live online webinar will cover the preservation of oversize works on paper and other supports commonly found in archival collections. Typical examples of such works are architectural plans, posters, and wall maps. Their history and production are discussed with a focus on their different processes of deterioration. Strategies for safely handling, transporting, and storing these works are presented.

  • An introduction to the preservation of paper-based collections, this live online webinar focuses on books, documents, photographs, and works of art on paper. It will include information on paper manufacture, deterioration, and proper storage. Also discussed are inks and colorants, adhesives, and image layers.

  • This live online webinar will cover the various types of mold and the criteria and parameters for mold development, with a special emphasis on molds specific to indoor environments that house collections and artifacts. Practical methods for controling and preventing mold blooms are discussed, as is responding to mold outbreaks.

  • This live online webinar will cover security measures that can ensure the safety of collections and staff. Policies and practices will be reviewed for low- and no-cost solutions to security problems, and additional measures for special collections will be addressed.

  • This live online webinar will cover climate control equipment; guidelines and best practices for temperature, relative humidity, light, and air quality; practical solutions to common environmental problems; and procedures for monitoring the environment.

  • At all stages of a photographic digitization project, you will be actively developing, capturing, and managing metadata to support the use and preservation of digital images. This workshop will identify standards, strategies, and tools appropriate for creating photographic image metadata, as well as highlight key decision points in metadata management and use. Hands-on activities will enhance the understanding of best practices for creating metadata that facilitates searchability of digital image collections.

    Topics will include:

    • Standards, best practices, and vocabularies for image description
    • Non-descriptive, embedded, and automated metadata capture
    • Strategies and tools for creating and managing metadata
    • Packaging, sharing, and re-using metadata
    • Leveraging user-contributed metadata

  • Disaster plans are just as important for digital collections as they are for analog collections. This webinar will introduce the elements of a disaster plan for digital collections and the issues to be considered when conducting a risk assessment.

  • Through lecture and demonstration, this workshop provides information on the techniques and specifications needed to reformat photographs and negatives. Topics to be covered include:

    • Working with unique vintage materials
    • Imaging challenges posed by various photographic processes
    • Post processing
    • Data management and file organization
    • Data back-up and storage systems
    • Introduction to metadata for photographs

Participants are encouraged to bring images for discussion of the challenges found in every collection of historic photographs.

  • Scrapbooks require special planning for reformatting. This webinar will introduce participants to the unique issues that they need to consider when planning microfilming or digitization projects for scrapbooks.

  • This in-person workshop, an introduction to the preservation of photographs, will focus on historical photographic prints, including their identification, deterioration, and conservation. Participants will learn to recognize various photographic formats and will study the preservation problems associated with each format type. The workshop will culminate with a discussion of storage concerns and an examination of photographs brought in by participants.

  • Digital reformatting improves access to your collections but shouldn’t endanger the physical condition of the originals. This webinar will introduce participants to safe handling techniques for the digitization of collection materials.Techniques include:

    ·Removing fasteners

    ·Handling fragile bound volumes

    ·Handling very brittle materials

    ·Handling photographs and negatives.

Appropriate digitization equipment will be discussed as will questions to ask vendors when forming a new working relationship.

  • This webinar offers an introduction on how to sustain the digital collections you have worked hard to create. Passive and active approaches will be covered as well as the overall concept of lifecycle management for digital collections.

  • This face-to-face workshop will introduce participants to the basic procedures of paper repair and their place in a comprehensive preservation program. The session will cover the nature of paper and will describe responsible solutions to common problems of unbound materials such as prints, drawings, maps, and documents. Participants will be given hands-on training in:

    • Proper handling
    • Surface cleaning
    • Mending
    • Flattening

Popular repair techniques to avoid will be discussed, and a materials and suppliers list will be provided.

  • This webinar offers an introduction to key metadata concepts, with a focus on understanding the different metadata schema. By the end of the webinar, participants will understand the basic types of metadata and the importance of metadata in terms of access, interoperability, and longevity.

  • This webinar explores the issues that cultural institutions face when planning digitization projects. Participants will learn the basic steps necessary for the planning and successful completion of digitization projects.

  • The Care of Paintings workshop covers the issues to consider when developing a collections care policy for traditional paintings on canvas or board. The workshop is helpful whether you are establishing new procedures or making improvements to existing collections care policies.

Topics include environmental issues, such as temperature, relative humidity, and pollutants; storage and display options; “best practices” for handling and transporting paintings; and housekeeping procedures. Participants also learn practical remedial care methods and are provided with guidelines for working with a conservator.

In October 2011, the workshop is being led by Alexis Miller, Associate Conservator of Paintings from the Balboa Art Conservation Center in San Diego.
