LOCATION

NEDCC, 100 Brickstone Square, Andover, Massachusetts

THE KARIBARI WORKSHOP is the first in a three-part series hosted by NEDCC and instructed by NCS staff for the paper conservation professional interested in basic Asian paintings conservation procedures. Subsequent workshops, part 2 and 3, will cover scroll mounting and folding screen construction. Dates are to be determined.

The first week-long workshop will cover the topic of karibari construction. The karibari board is a traditional Japanese lightweight panel used to flatten/dry scrolls and works of art on paper and silk.  The karibari board is constructed with multiple layers of Japanese paper over a Japanese cedar wood core.  The surfaces are coated with kakishibu (fermented persimmon juice) to create a water resistant surface. The structure of the karibari panel is the basis for the construction of each panel that makes up a folding screen.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

The workshop includes construction, lectures, demonstrations, and videos related to the construction of karibari panels and lining techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to use traditional Japanese hand tools and apply traditional techniques that will work with western conservation procedures. Application of stretch drying techniques will also be demonstrated for irregularly cockled artifacts that cannot be flattened by pressing. The karibari panels to be constructed by participants who have selected to take their panels will have a maximum dimension of 60" x 33" x 1” that can be used for practical conservation purposes.  A demonstration of full size panel construction will also take place.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Yoshi Nishio is the leading Asian art conservator in the USA.  He comes from a strong craftsman background, having started traditional Japanese painting and calligraphy at the age of five in Japan, and receiving his Masters degree in conservation from the Cooperstown Graduate Program. He worked at the Freer Gallery from 1984 to 1990, and received the Smithsonian Award in recognition of his work in 1985.  He also worked at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston from 1990 to 1993. Mr. Nishio has a significant understanding of Eastern philosophy and Western scientific analysis and materials which, combined, make Mr. Nishio unique in our profession.

Kyoichi Itoh was trained in traditional conservation and scroll and screen mounting by his father starting at the age of six and throughout his childhood, and later at Harada Studio for a ten year apprenticeship in Kyoto.  He received a Certificate in Conservation from Bunkacho (Japanese Government Agency for Cultural Affairs). He worked at the Freer Gallery from 1986 to 1996, and received Smithsonian Awards in recognition of his work in 1990 and 1996.  He is a visiting instructor at Tainan National University of Art and National Normal University in Taiwan.  He has also taught many conservators and interns in this country.
